What is Second Impact Syndrome

Second-Impact Syndrome-SIS

Occurs when the brain rapidly swells, and catastrophically, after a person suffers a second concussion before symptoms from an earlier one have subsided.  This second blow may occur minutes, days or weeks after an initial concussion, and even the mildest grade of concussion can lead to SIS.  The condition is often fatal, and almost everyone who is not killed is severely disabled.

Reed's Story

On December 7, 2018, Reed's life was forever changed.  He suffered multiple grade 2 concussions during one wrestling match that was never stopped.  The adults that were entrusted with his safety failed to protect Reed.  The match was not stopped by the referee, the trainer or his own coach.  Even after a team mate told the coach something was wrong with Reed, the match still was not stopped!  Even though Reed showed obvious signs of a concussion during  the match, the trainer didn't check him before  releasing him off the mat to go wrestle more.  Minutes after being released off the mat a teammate ran back onto the mat and said Reed didn't even know his name.
